Drum Workshop for Dancers – ADELAIDE
Beneath the Batucada is a hands on, immersive musicality workshop, designed specifically for samba dancers, led by Rob Arcari of Bloco 3K. By the end of the 2 hour workshop, you will be experiencing the music you love from the drummer’s perspective by playing the instruments that make Rio Carnaval swing!
You will learn the techniques and rhythms required for your chosen instrument, and the classic forms which the music takes. We will cover different traditional bossas and calls, as well as understanding where and how the samba starts and stops. We will also look at the particular swing that samba has, which can be so hard for many foreigners to fully understand.
By the end of the session your new-found understanding of what makes the music work, will give you the tools you need to approach your dancing in a new way. The knowledge you will gain will allow you to anticipate what the music is going to do, and give you the confidence to react accordingly.
Although the session has been designed with dancers in mind, it would suit any beginner keen to delve into the world of samba percussion.

YOUR TEACHER
Rob Arcari has spent the last 20 years playing and teaching across the globe, but extensively throughout Australia, Europe, Brazil and Cuba. He’s kept busy in Melbourne where he is Mestre de Bateria and founder of Bloco 3K. On top of this, he is also Mestre of Unidos da Cacatua and musical director of Maracatu Estrela do Mar.
Rob is also regularly in Rio to play, where he’s a drummer with the Escolas de Samba; Acadêmicos da Rocinha, Estácio de Sá & Imperatriz Leopoldinense as well as Maracatu Tambores de Olokun.

EXPERIENCE
The class is open level, with no experience required.
If you are an intermediate/advanced percussionist, used to playing samba, you might prefer our Unlocking Rio Samba Workshops
INSTRUMENTS
All instruments will be provided.
Instruments will be those traditionally found in a Rio bateria -e.g. Surdo, Repique, Caixa, Tamborim, Chocalho, Agogô etc
WHAT YOU NEED
Dress comfortably.
We recommend you bring some earplugs as it will be loud.

COVID
We will be adhering to local guidelines, and we’re obviously aware that things change from day to day.
We realise things change in terms of government restrictions in the time between you purchasing a ticket and the event going ahead. If these changes mean you can no longer attend due to lockdowns, border restrictions etc etc, we understand. In these instances there will be a full refund.
Likewise, if changing restrictions disrupt Rob’s ability to travel, then firstly we will try to reschedule to a suitable time/date. If this date no longer works for you, then again refunds will be available.
