Caixa with Mestre Junior
Saturday 22nd August 2020 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 pm AEST
We’re privileged to once again offer another opportunity to study caixa online with Mestre Junior from Bateria Avassalador, Acadêmicos da Rocinha.
This time around, we will be looking at more caixa styles from the differents escolas, as well as some variations and other hints and tips.
Junior started his samba career playing with Portela in 1997 and over the years has played as a ritmista with many schools including Grande Rio, Unidos da Tijuca, Mocidade Independente, Beija Flor to name a few. As a multi-instrumentalist he would like to play Terceira, tamborim, marcação, repique, but he is best know for his caixa.
He started directing in the famous Santa Teresa bloco Badalo. From there, he was promoted to director in the escola de samba Vizinha Faladeira, where he was already playing as a ritmista. Similarly, a promotion came at Rocinha, first to director and then to Mestre de Bateria, where he is today. He’s also worked as a director of both Cubango and Viradouro, where he played for many years. Today he’s kept busy at Rocinha and also directing Imperatriz Leopoldinense. He still found time however, to go out and parade with two more schools during this year’s carnival, playing with Império da Tijuca & São Clemente.
As well as his prolific work within the samba schools of Rio, Junior has also been playing with the infamous Batuque Digital since 2009, where he teaches and performs.
This workshop will be aimed at an intermediate/advanced level. It will be expected that you are comfortable making the basic sounds on the drum, and playing the basic groove. Any doubts then check our FAQ.
