Tamborim with Marquinho Passos
Saturday 15th August 2020 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am AEST
For round 2 of our Solidarity Workshops we wanted to include a class on tamborim, and who better to teach than Rocinha’s Tam Director Marquinho.
Marquinho Passos started playing as a percussionist in 1999 in the bateria of Vizinha Faladeira Samba School. From there he paraded with the tamborins in numerous baterias such as Unidos da Tijuca, Portela and Acadêmicos do Salgueiro, amongst others.
Whilst in Vizinha Faladeira he first became a director of the bateria in 2004, and in 2005 became director of the tamborims, under the command of Mestre Jorginho. This continued until 2008, during the last two years of which, he had the opportunity to work alongside Mestre Lolo (now of Imperatriz).
In 2009 he became director of Paraíso do Tuiuti with Mestre Ricardinho. In 2014, he started directing at Acadêmicos da Rocinha under Mestre Maurão. This partnership with Mestre Maurão continued in 2015 & 2016 at Acadêmicos do Cubango, and 2017 and 2018 at Unidos do Viradouro.
Since returning to Acadêmicos da Rocinha in 2019, Marquinho has remained as director of the tamborins under Mestre Junior.
As well as his long line of Samba Schools, as both a percussionist and director of tamborins, he was an integral part of the group Batuke Samba Show between 2012 and 2015.
Since 2015 Marquinho has been part of the group Batuque Digital, which brings together many of the most renowned professional percussionists from Rio’s carnaval.
This workshop will be aimed at an intermediate/advanced level. That means your are comfortable playing some carreteiro (the turning technique) used on tamborim. The tempo will be considerably slower than that played in Rio though.
