Surdo de Terceira with Renan Gohan
We’re super grateful for the opportunity to study with Renan. In this workshop we’ll be looking at the style and techniques used by Imperatriz’s terceiras, as well as drawing on his extensive background with other schools and groups.
Renan Gohan’s musical career started in 2001, playing with Bloco do Barriga, in the community where he was raised, Cidade Alta in Cordovil, Rio de Janeiro. He became director in the bloco in 2015.
In 2006 he started to parade with Imperatriz Leopoldinense. In 2009 he was invited by the (then) Mestre Marcone to be a director, where he stayed until 2011. He returned to the direction of the drums in 2020 under Mestre Lolo.
As well as Imperatriz, Renan has directed and played with numerous samba schools throughout Rio. In 2013 he was a director at Porto da Pedra with Mestre Thiago Diogo, in 2014 he was Director at União da Ilha, in 2015 he directed Grande Rio where he stayed until 2018. In 2019 he directed at Renascer de Jacarepaguá with Mestre Junior Sampaio. Since 2019 he has also been a Director at Acadêmicos da Rocinha with Mestre Augusto Junior, where he remains today.
Although Renan loves to direct, he still manages to find time to play, particularly his beloved surdo de terceira and caixa. Over the years he has paraded as a ritmista with numerous top ranking Rio schools including Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Unidos da Tijuca, Porto da Pedra, São Clemente, Portela, Rocinha, Curicica, Cubango, Viradouro, Império da Tijuca & Estácio de Sá.
Renan has also been a member of Batuque Digital since 2013, where he plays both caixa and surdo. This group consists of approximately 50 percussionists, many of which are directors or mestres of different samba schools throughout Rio. They perform mixing traditional bateria instruments with electronic dance music in clubs and events across the city. As well as the performance group, they also have a teaching space where they hold regular workshops.
Since 2017 he has also been the Mestre of Bloco Urubuzada, a crew that parades in the streets of Rio de Janeiro whenever their beloved Flamengo Soccer club are playing.
